Description

Hyundai launched the first practical long-range EV in India in the form of the Kona electric. EVs have been on sale in India since more than a decade (Reva) but they were not designed to be practical enough to replace the regular ICE powered cars. The advent of EVs in India was inevitable and for the same, Maruti Suzuki is also working on its plans to launch an EV early next year in the form of the WagonR EV. Now according to a report by LiveMint, Suzuki Motor Corporation is planning to build a new EV based on the Ertiga MPV.

After WagonR EV, Maruti Suzuki to develop an Ertiga-based electric vehicle for India

It will be the manufacturer’s second electric vehicle in India after the Wagor EV and if made, could be launched by the end of 2020 or maybe even 2021. Sources aware of the developments said that the company is working on bringing in more electric cars in India by the next few years. The recent government policy changes have helped Suzuki in the cause and now the brand is eyeing the EV space of the country which has some of the most polluted cities in the world.

Apart from the recently launched Kona EV and the upcoming MG e-ZS, other EVs lined up for their Indian debut include the Tata Altroz EV and the Nissan Leaf among others. Tata might also launch its Tigor EV for passenger segment since its only available for commercial use right now. The whole EV scene in India has received a boost from the recent Union budget for fiscal 2019-20. The incentives for EVs now include income tax rebates for electric car buyers and exemption from customs duty on imports of lithium-ion cells, both of which will encourage other manufacturers to launch EVs in the market.

Talking about the Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki will launch a new 6-seater version of the popular MPV next month in India. It will be much more luxurious than the current models of the MPV and will also sport a few design changes to set itself apart from the regular models. The engine options, however, will remain the same as on the ongoing Ertiga models.
